European Capitals of Inclusion and Diversity Award 2026 finalists

Over Piraeus

As one of Europe’s great maritime gateways, Piraeus has welcomed people, goods, refugees and ideas for centuries. That history of openness has shaped something durable: a right-based approach that treats diversity not as a challenge to be managed, but as a pillar of local development.

Piraeus believes that inclusion must begin at home. Gender-sensitive recruitment and leadership mentoring open pathways for women. Accessibility audits and reasonable accommodation create working conditions where persons with disabilities can fully contribute. Intergenerational programmes connect young and older people, whilst LGBTIQ+ inclusion initiatives signal that the city’s workforce should reflect the population it serves.

For the 168,000 residents of Piraeus, the Community Centre operates as a single access point to social welfare for migrants, refugees, persons with disabilities and other groups at risk of exclusion, complemented by a shelter for women experiencing domestic violence. Binding it all together, the Municipal Committee for Equality provides governance oversight, ensuring that the principle of equality flows through every department rather than resting with any one of them.
