Over Piraeus
There is a particular kind of credibility that comes only from example. Piraeus understood this and rather than pointing outward, towards employers across the city, it turned the magnifying glass on itself.
The Inclusive Municipal Workforce and Culture Programme begins with a question not every administration is willing to ask, namely does our own workplace reflect the community we serve? In Piraeus, the answer shapes everything. Diversity-focused recruitment, accessibility adjustments and continuous anti-discrimination training apply across the entire workforce. Diversity Ambassadors embedded in each department carry inclusion into daily working life. The monthly Inclusion Partner Initiative goes further, publicly recognising teams who put inclusive practices into action and making the standard visible, not just aspirational.
The measures are specific where it counts. Staff with disabilities receive reasonable accommodations, supported by sensitivity training for colleagues. Youth employment pathways and age-friendly infrastructure span across working life. A leadership mentoring programme has also increased women’s representation in decision-making roles by 30% within two years.
